What a week. Welcome to Spring!!

We've had an amazing run of spring weather here in Canterbury — that golden, almost-summer warmth that makes you want to throw every window open. And then today: rain, cold, and a reminder that spring in New Zealand doesn't arrive on a schedule. Typical.

That's spring, isn't it? Glorious and fickle in equal measure. The kind of week where you want the windows open and a blanket within reach.



Welcome to the Weekly Edit.

1. Early Spring

So how do you style a home for a season that can't make up its mind? You do both. Spring styling isn't about packing away all the warmth the moment September hits — it's about layering the new with the still-needed.

Bring in the signs of the season: a pot of hyacinths or narcissus by the kitchen sink, a few stems of blossom in a vase, a pale cushion swapped in for a heavier one. The house wakes up a little.

But keep the snuggly blanket on the arm of the sofa. Keep the heavier throw within reach. Because spring will tease you with a 22-degree day and then hand you a 12-degree night, and the best homes are the ones that are ready for both.



The shift isn't a switch. It's a slow, lovely layering.

2. The Workhorse

Quick tip — and this is one of those details that doesn't get talked about enough. We all spend time choosing fabric and colour (and yes, those matter) — but the lining is the quiet workhorse of a beautiful window. It's what gives a curtain its drape, its weight, and the way it falls in a cleanly. It's what blocks the 5am summer light so you actually sleep. It's what protects your fabric from the sun so it still looks beautiful in ten years.

Three things we think about when we're choosing a lining:



1. Light — do you want to block it, filter it, or let it glow through?

2. Warmth — a thermal lining makes a real difference in a Canterbury spring (and those cold nights that still sneak in)

3. Weight — heavier lining can mean a better drape and a more luxurious feel. It's the kind of detail that doesn't show — but you feel it every single day.

 3. September!! How?

Yes, we're going to say the C-word. Christmas. How is it that close already? (Shhhh - 16 Friday's to go!!) Here's the thing about curtains and shutters: they're made to order, and there are lead times. Beautiful bespoke window furnishings don't happen overnight — there's measuring, fabric selection, manufacturing, installation. Six to eight weeks, typically, depending on the job and the fabric and 12 weeks for shutters.



Which means: if you've been thinking about new curtains, blinds, or shutters and you'd love them in before the Christmas rush — September is your month of action.
