The Weekly Edit

There's something perfectly fitting about this week capturing the true essence of early spring - Father's Day celebrations mingling with weather that can't quite decide what it wants to be, changeable and a little crazy! As I write this, the sky outside is doing that classic spring dance between warm nor’west sunshine turning to grey skies and sudden showers, reminding me that the most beautiful seasons are often the most unpredictable.

It's been a week of embracing change and finding beauty in the unexpected - from selecting luxurious fabrics that mirror stunning landscapes to introducing just the right touch of color into timeless palettes. Sometimes the most inspiring design moments come when we stop trying to control every element and instead learn to work with what each day brings, creating spaces that feel both comforting and surprising.

Pour yourself something warm (or cool, depending on what this changeable spring weather is doing in your corner of the world), settle into your favorite spot, and join me for some weekend design inspiration.

1. Luxe Textiles

I've been completely absorbed this week in selecting fabrics for a custom sofa, chair and ottoman for our beautiful Queenstown project - and it's reminded me why I love this part of the design process so much. There's something magical about finding textiles that don't just furnish a space, but actually capture the essence of the landscape outside the windows.

We're leaning towards deep warm mocha tones in a hearty weave paired with the most gorgeous warm brown velvet - Mokum's Velvelux in 'Pinecone' - that feels like it could have been inspired by the rich earth tones of those impressive Queenstown mountain ranges. Add in luxe longer pile velvets for the cushions and another beautiful weave for the ottoman, and you have an interior that mirrors both the dramatic landscape and the seasonal shifts from cold winters to warm summers.

The goal is creating a space that feels both sophisticated enough for those stunning lake and mountain views, and deeply cozy enough to sink into during Queenstown's chilly winter evenings. It's this kind of thoughtful fabric selection that transforms a beautiful space into something that truly feels like it belongs in its setting - where the interior and exterior feel like one seamless, harmonious experience.

2. Timeless Palette

Color has been on my mind this week as I work with a client who's ready to introduce some personality into her new kitchen design. We're weaving in soft duck egg blues with warm oak tones, all anchored by fresh white - creating a palette that feels both timeless and just interesting enough to make you smile every time you walk into the room.

There's an art to introducing color in a way that enhances rather than overwhelms, and this project is the perfect example of how thoughtful restraint can create something truly special. The duck egg blue brings that gentle pop of personality without competing with the natural beauty of the oak, while the fresh white keeps everything feeling clean and contemporary.

What I love most about this approach is how it creates a kitchen that will age beautifully - the colors are sophisticated enough to feel current but classic enough to still feel fresh in ten years' time. Sometimes the most successful color stories are the ones that whisper rather than shout.

 3. Celebrating Dad's

This Father's Day has me thinking about all the incredible dads and dad-figures in our lives - the ones who taught us that love shows up in a thousand small ways. My own dad is completely awesome, and I'm so grateful for the way he's shaped who I am today.

There's something special about the dads who show up consistently, who offer quiet wisdom when we need it most, and who somehow always know exactly what to say (or when to say nothing at all). Whether it's biological fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, mentors, or chosen family members who've stepped into that role - these are the people who help us feel grounded and loved.

Today feels like the perfect day to pause and appreciate all the ways these special people have enriched our lives. To the dads reading this - thank you for all the ways you show up, support, and love. You're making a difference in ways both big and small, and it doesn't go unnoticed.

Happy Father's Day to all the amazing dads and father-figures out there!

4. Katy's Mini Edit

Loving for 2025

A gorgeous client selection of curtain fabrics in soft sandstone, linen and nougat - such an elegant, refined and timeless palette that feels both sophisticated and wonderfully calming. I can't wait to see how these beautiful tones come together in their space.

Design Tip

When working with neutral palettes, layer different textures rather than relying on color for interest - the play of light across varied surfaces creates depth and sophistication.

Excited About...

Design Day coming up this week - when suppliers and showrooms open their doors to show off all the latest releases! There's nothing quite like seeing new collections in person and getting inspired by what's ahead for the design world.
