The Weekly Edit

There's something magical about the way winter transforms our relationship with home - suddenly we're drawn to spaces that wrap us in warmth and comfort. As the cooler days settle in, I've been fascinated by the psychology behind our seasonal cravings for burnt orange throws and terracotta vases.

This week's Edit explores the science of winter styling - from understanding why our brains instinctively seek visual warmth when temperatures drop, to mastering the simple formula that can transform any room in just five minutes. We're also diving into the styling mistakes that leave homes feeling cold despite the heating being on.

Pour yourself something warm (hot chocolate weather has officially arrived), find your coziest corner, and settle in for some midweek design wisdom that celebrates both the psychology of comfort and the art of seasonal styling.

P.S. If you've already started swapping out your summer cushions for something warmer - you're ahead of the game! Trust those instincts - they're backed by science.

1. Winter Warmth

There's something deeply instinctive about our craving for warm colours when winter arrives - the way burnt orange makes us feel instantly cozy, how deep burgundy creates a sense of security, the comfort that golden yellows bring to grey days.

This week, I've been thinking about why our homes suddenly feel like they need that extra layer of warmth. It's not just aesthetic preference - it's psychology. Our brains are hardwired to seek visual warmth when temperatures drop, a survival instinct that translates beautifully into interior styling. From rich terracotta vases that anchor a room to soft throws in amber tones, these aren't just decorative choices - they're emotional responses to the season.

The magic happens when you understand this connection. A single warm-toned throw draped thoughtfully, ceramic pieces in earthy hues, layered lighting - suddenly your space doesn't just look different, it feels different. It's this understanding of how color affects our wellbeing that transforms a house into a true winter sanctuary.

2. 5-Min Styling Hack

Sometimes the smallest changes create the biggest impact - especially when winter arrives and our spaces need that extra dose of comfort. This week, I've been perfecting what I call the "5-minute winter transformation" with clients who want immediate warmth without a complete room overhaul.

The formula is beautifully simple: one thoughtfully placed throw in a warm tone, ceramic vases in earthy hues positioned to catch natural light, and layered lighting that creates gentle pools of warmth throughout the room.

What makes this work is understanding visual weight and emotional response. That plum throw doesn't just add colour - it invites you to pause and rest. Those terracotta vases don't just fill space - they ground the room with natural warmth. This is styling at its most essential - understanding how small, considered choices can completely shift how a space feels.

 3. Winter Styling

We see this often - homes that look beautiful but feel cold, even with the heating on. The culprit? Styling choices that work perfectly in summer but leave you feeling disconnected from your space when winter arrives.

Light linens, bright whites, and minimal accessories create that fresh summer feeling we love, but they can make winter feel stark and unwelcoming. Your home should evolve with the seasons, just like your wardrobe does.

The fix is simpler than you think. Swap those crisp white cushions for textured ones in warm tones, add a few ceramic pieces in earthy hues, layer in some ambient lighting. Suddenly your space feels like it's welcoming winter rather than fighting it.

Loving for 2025

How cozy our home feels in the evenings now - we've added a few warm throws, switched to softer lighting and with the fire blazing suddenly everyone's lingering in the lounge longer instead of disappearing to their rooms. It's those small changes that remind me how you can make the seasons work for your interior.

Design Tip

Winter styling secret: Layer your lighting like you layer your clothes. Overhead lighting alone feels harsh in winter - add table lamps, floor lamps, even candles to create those warm pools of light that make you want to linger in a room.

Excited About...

Seeing the final reveal of a house we've been working on for a few months! Our client is moving down this week and the team gets to walk her through her new home - completely styled and furnished through us from top to bottom. There's nothing quite like that moment when a client sees their vision come to life for the first time.
