Ask Katy: Curtains for Gable Ceilings

We asked you what you wanted to learn more about and one great question we received was "what are the best window treatments for high gable ceilings?  Let's discuss creating shade in those beautiful, sky-high ceilings!  Although gable ceilings can be a wonderful feature, creating a sense of open space and allowing more natural light into the room, they can be difficult to work with when it comes to window treatments.  The options are limited but when done well, will help to elevate and add to the interior style and feel of the home.

Let's look at the best options! We suggest either having static, fixed curtains which are held off the window with tie backs or shaped timber shutters.  These are two very contrasting treatments when it comes to aesthetic and function.  Both treatments are worth considering before selecting the best solution for your space.

Shaped shutters will provide a clean and sophisticated look while allowing you to show off the beautiful angles of your window.  They not only provide light control and privacy but also assist with insulation and noise reduction.  Due to the height of gable windows, the shutter blades can either be controlled using a wand or automation.

Shutters suit any style home from modern contemporary, architectural builds to traditional, heritage style homes and everything in between!

Curtains will add an element of softness and will help the space feel relaxed, cosy and warm.  The thermal qualities of fabric will help to control the temperature of the space, especially with blockout lining.  You will also have the flexibility to control the light whether it be filtered with a sheer fabric, or blocked out with a lined curtain.  When draped to the sides of the window, the curved lines in the fabric will help to break up the geometric, angular lines of the window.  The type of curtain fabric you select will also affect the feel of the room - e.g. light and floaty or dark and moody.  Don't forget to consider the style of hold backs or tie backs you are using.  If you are choosing a soft, floaty sheer fabric then perhaps a fabric or rope tie back would work well.  If you are choosing a heavy velvet fabric then a more sturdy metal holdback will work better.

An alternative option to consider is leaving the top angled section of your window clear and only covering the lower half of the window - as long as there is something to fix to - such as a transom bar, your options are now endless!  You might also want to consider how an exterior cladding could work in combination with curtains e.g. outdoor louvres or shutters.  The earlier we are involved in the process with your architectural planning the better resolved your window furnishings can be.
